Dulse – The Third Seaweed, Known as a Superfood from the Sea

Dulse, often called the “parsley of the sea,” has long been used as both food and medicine in countries like Ireland and Canada. Even today, it is valued not only as a nutritious food but also as a key ingredient in dietary supplements due to its rich nutrient content.

However, global demand for dulse far exceeds supply, and the amount distributed within Japan remains extremely limited.

At Sakamoto, we focused on the nutritional potential of dulse and became the first company in Japan (based on our internal research) to successfully establish a stable supply of Hokkaido-grown dulse.
We have also succeeded in commercializing it at a reasonable price. By making dulse more accessible, we aim to support healthier eating habits in everyday life.

WHAT'S DULSE?

What is Dulse?

Dulse is a type of red seaweed, classified in the same family as nori.

It shares a similar flavor profile with nori, but is distinguished by its crisp texture and vibrant reddish-purple color when fresh.

Because it thrives in cold waters, dulse grows naturally in areas such as Hokkaido, Japan. However, it remained largely unused as food in Japan, where kelp and wakame dominated seaweed consumption.

In recent years, however, dulse has started gaining attention domestically as a superfood, following its popularity in Northern Europe and North America, and has been featured in multiple media outlets.
